Colorado Online School FAQs

Colorado Preparatory Academy offers full-time enrollment for grades K–12. To be eligible for the program, kindergarten students must be five years old and first grade students must be six years old before October 1 of the enrolling year.

Kindergarten students receive math, language arts, and one other course. Language arts, math, science, history, music, and art are the core courses for most grades. There are also other courses in the appropriate grade levels, such as world languages. High school students also have access to AP® courses, as well as numerous electives.

Yes, we provide all the textbooks and instructional materials that are needed to complete the program. These books and materials are sent to students directly.

Yes, all students are required to attend a face-to-face enrollment conference before starting with CPA. This provides an excellent opportunity to meet teachers and staff.

The program is self-paced and flexible within the parameters specified by state law.

When a student completes a course, the Colorado Preparatory Academy will send him or her to the next level up until March 31 of any school year. After April 1, courses cannot be ordered again until the next fall. Teachers work closely with students to help pace the curriculum to meet the student’s goals for advancement.

In the younger grades, many of the online lessons include offline work. Students in grades K–2 spend about 30–40 percent of their time on the computer, while students in grades 3–5 spend about 50–60 percent of their time online. Screen time increases in middle school, and by high school, most of the school day is online.

CPA understands the importance of face-to-face instructional opportunities and we offer options for in-person instruction, which may range from enrichment programs for advanced learners to interventions with students who may be struggling.

The beauty of our program is that it is flexible enough to meet children where they are in any given subject and take them where they want to go. So, for example, if your fourth grader is doing math on a sixth-grade level and reading on a fourth-grade level, we can tailor your curriculum and lesson plans to meet his or her abilities.

Throughout the year, students are invited to participate in school outings, field trips (e.g., to historical sites, museums, zoos), picnics, and other social events. We expect local clusters of students and parents to get together on a regular basis in their areas. We also are exploring new ways to interact socially using the powerful reach of the internet. The online Family Directory provides a way for families to network with families in their region of the state. With online discussions and forums, new types of communities can be formed that are based not on geography but on shared interests.

There are no home visits as part of the program, and there are no cameras or any other intrusions into your home. This school was created to help your child obtain a first-class education and serve your family’s needs. If you ever feel that it is not right for your family or your child, you can withdraw at any time.

Colorado Preparatory Academy collects Personal Identifiable Information (PII), as identified as on CDE data dictionary, for the normal day-to-day school management and operations of student services as also listed on the CDE data dictionary fact sheet. Colorado Preparatory Academy shares these Personal Identifiable Information (PII) data points, as identified as on CDE data dictionary, to the following third party in order that it can provide the day-to-day management and operations of student services to Colorado Preparatory Academy. Section 22-16-101 et seq., please be advised that if Education reEnvisioned BOCES and Colorado Preparatory ceases using or refuses to use a School Service On-Demand Provider pursuant to C.R.S. 22-16-107 (3) (c), Education reEnvisioned BOCES and Colorado Preparatory shall post on its website the name of the On-Demand provider, with any written response that the on-Demand Provider may submit, and will notify the Colorado Department of Education, which will post on its website the On-Demand Provider’s name and any written response.
