What tests are required as part of the program?

Students who are enrolled in Colorado Preparatory Academy (CPA) are required to take the following tests:

  • SAT (Grade 11)
  • K12 unit assessments
  • Math and literacy benchmark testing
  • English Language Assessment, as determined by individual needs
  • CMAS Testing (3-8 Math & ELA, additional 5th, 8th & 11th graders Science)

Do I have to participate in state testing?

Yes. Students are expected to participate in assessments throughout the school year, as each assessment serves a different purpose in supporting their learning and academic progress.

Our Beginning, Middle, and End-of-Year Benchmark Assessments are required. These assessments help us measure student growth, identify strengths and areas where additional support may be needed, and ensure students are placed appropriately in instruction.

Lesson and Unit Assessments are also required as part of the curriculum. In many courses, these assessments must be completed before coursework can be marked complete and grades can be finalized.

We also strongly encourage participation in Colorado State Assessments, including CMAS and the SAT (for applicable grade levels). These assessments provide valuable information about how students are performing compared to state academic standards. They help our school evaluate the effectiveness of our instructional programs, identify areas for improvement, and ensure we continue providing a high-quality educational experience for all students. Participation also helps us meet state accountability requirements and allows families to see how their student is progressing academically.

Additional assessments include:

  • CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test): Optional for students who would like to be considered for our Gifted & Talented Program.
  • CoAlt Assessments: For eligible students with significant cognitive disabilities, participation is determined by the student’s IEP team. CoAlt is an alternate state assessment and replaces CMAS for students who qualify.
  • WIDA/ACCESS: Mandatory for English Language Learner students, the purpose is to measure English language proficiency and ensure English Learner (EL) students are receiving the language support they need to access their education.

Note: Some assessments are required to be taken in person with a trained proctor. When in-person testing is necessary, we work to provide testing locations throughout Colorado whenever possible to help minimize travel for families. Our goal is to make the testing process as smooth as possible while ensuring students receive the support, placement, and opportunities they need to be successful.
