Owen’s Journey Through Robotics and the Arts at Colorado Preparatory Academy
For sixth grader Owen, school has never just been about academics; it’s been a center for creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning. A student at Colorado Preparatory Academy, Owen made the switch from a traditional classroom to virtual learning in fifth grade after realizing that a more personalized education and closer teacher connections would help him thrive. Since then, he’s been embracing his own unique path, especially robotics, performing arts, and outdoor adventures.
Most recently, Owen had the exciting opportunity to compete in the K12 Robotics Competition in Washington, D.C. Teaming up with his cousin, Macy, the duo called their robotics team “Maverick” after Macy’s beloved chocolate lab. Together they put their coding skills to the test in a high-stakes competition on June 3 and won 3rd place overall for their age division!

“It was really fun… but also stressful,” Owen shared. “We practiced all day, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and during the final round, everything went a little crazy. The code didn’t work, the batteries fell out, we had to scramble to get it rebooted and working again!” Even with the unexpected technical hiccups, the team managed to finish with energy and excitement, and Owen says the entire experience, from coding challenges to the indoor seesaw at headquarters, was worth it. Outside the competition, Owen enjoyed a memorable road trip with his dad, exploring D.C.’s landmarks, visiting the International Spy Museum, and making stops in Ohio and St. Louis along the way.
The flexible structure of Colorado Preparatory Academy has empowered Owen to pursue a dynamic mix of academics and extracurricular activities. With the ability to manage his schedule, he actively engages in physical activity, creative hobbies, and community programs that support his growth beyond the virtual classroom.

This adaptable model has also allowed Owen to explore the performing arts in meaningful ways. From behind-the-scenes technical work to on-stage performance opportunities, he’s developed valuable skills in both creative and technical environments. Throughout the summer, Owen continues to stay active and inspired. Whether he’s exploring new places, building his robotics experience, or preparing for upcoming arts opportunities, Owen demonstrates how online learning can open doors to well-rounded, real-world experiences.
