Student Spotlight: Darray
Turning Online Learning into Opportunity at Colorado Preparatory Academy
At Colorado Preparatory Academy, students have the opportunity to grow, connect, and lead in ways they never imagined. For Darray, her journey with Colorado Preparatory Academy has been nothing short of transformative. Once a shy and reserved student, she has blossomed into a confident leader, taking on multiple roles that have shaped her academic and personal success.
Darray’s parents first came across Colorado Preparatory Academy through its social media presence, which highlighted its unique programs and supportive community. Encouraged by what they saw, they enrolled her in August 2023. Now a junior, Darray has fully embraced the opportunities Colorado Preparatory Academy provides. Having attended traditional brick-and-mortar schools until fourth grade, then transitioning through homeschooling, private school, and virtual learning, she found her perfect fit at Colorado Preparatory Academy.
Darray’s involvement in Colorado Preparatory Academy’s student ambassador program, receiving the school’s Howl Award, and participating in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) have all played significant roles in her personal growth. She was among the inaugural members of Colorado Preparatory Academy’s FBLA chapter and currently serves as vice president, after previously holding the position of secretary. Through FBLA, she has traveled to district competitions, state conferences, and business events, building lasting memories with her chapter.
Beyond FBLA, Darray is highly engaged in various leadership roles, including:
- Library 21c Teen Advisory Board Member
- President of the Healing with Music Club
- Leader in Colorado Preparatory Academy’s Music Club
- Writer and Artist for the School Magazine
- Team Captain for Walk to End Alzheimer’s
- Honorary Inspire Youth Journal Ambassador
- Stride K12 Zone National Teen Advisory Intern
- National Youth Press Member
- Leadership Initiatives Business Intern
She is also working on her FBLA Capstone project and creating a “social circle” initiative, all while running for an FBLA state officer position this year.
Darray’s daily routine is a testament to her dedication and drive. She balances a dynamic schedule that includes chemistry, algebra, and leadership meetings. From back-to-back FBLA meetings to magazine club discussions Darray takes her leadership roles in stride. In between academics, she enjoys walks, gym workouts, curating Spotify playlists, and working on her art portfolio.

Her talent in art has earned her an invitation to participate in the 2025 Art Exhibit at East Library Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD), where she will showcase her oil, acrylic, and charcoal pieces.
For Darray, Colorado Preparatory Academy’s teachers have made a lasting impact on her journey. “For instance, my student ambassador advisor, Mrs. Wortley, is an
incredibly kind and inspiring leader.” Darray said. “In an online setting, Colorado Preparatory Academy teachers go the extra mile to ensure each student succeeds, which is impressive given the limited in-person interaction compared to brick-and-mortar schools.”
Darray plans to attend the University of Colorado Denver, where she will major in architectural engineering with aspirations of opening her own firm. Outside of academics, she enjoys painting, writing competitions, roller skating, and spending time with friends at arcades and malls.

One of the biggest misconceptions about online school Darray had was that it can be difficult to form friendships, however, Darray’s experience has proven otherwise. Through Colorado Preparatory Academy’s many in-person events—such as student ambassador dinners, prom, and blended learning days—she has built meaningful connections. She recalls meeting fellow ambassadors at a pre-prom dinner, where they bonded over games before heading to the dance, where she exchanged numbers with new friends.
“Stepping out of my comfort zone has truly helped me grow,” Darray shared. “I went from knowing little to no one to having so many friends and sharing unforgettable memories.”
Her story is a shining example of how Colorado Preparatory Academy empowers students to thrive, connect, and lead. Whether through academics, leadership, or the arts, Darray continues to make an incredible impact—and her journey is only just beginning.
